J.I. Professional Career

J.I. was featured in the second season of The Rap Game, a Lifetime reality program presented by Jermaine Dupri. Dupri discovered the then-fifteen-year-freestyles old’s on Instagram and invited him to the event.

Rivera won one of the challenges, earning a position on the cover of Hip Hop Weekly magazine. Although he did not win the entire competition, his excellent performance earned him a sizable fanbase, and he followed up with the release of his first song, “No Static.”

His YouTube channel had surpassed 500,000 views by the end of the year. In 2017, he self-released his first record, a three-track extended play titled Barely Famous.

After the show’s clout waned, he confessed he lost motivation and shifted his attention away from his music. He had squandered all of his earnings from The Rap Game on drugs and was contemplating a career in construction.

After being evicted from his mother’s home, he decided to give music one go and connected with future manager Gabi Acevedo to resume his career.

In October 2019, he released Hood Life Krisis, Vol. 1, which included his breakthrough hit “Need Me,” a “melodic, punch-line-laden” tune that samples Ma’s 2000 song “Best of Me, Part 2.”

In November, with the song having accumulated over 3 million Spotify listens, he announced a partnership with Interscope Records through G*Starr Entertainment

He also released the album’s fifth and final music video, this time for “Love Won’t Change.” As of 2022, “Need Me” remained his most-watched video, with over 115 million views on YouTube.

That December, he published Hood Life Krisis, Vol. 2, and the following month, he went on his first headline national tour.

With his last performances in his hometown of New York, he became the only musician in history to sell out the renowned SOB’s venue on three consecutive nights.

Notably, Drake paid tribute to him in April during an Instagram Live session with OVO Mark by performing and singing along to his songs “Used To” and “On Me.”

He released “Proud of Me” a week later, a new song accompanied by a music video. Following his appearance on Lil Tjay’s State of Emergency E.P., he teamed with him again in June on the track “Hood Scars 2,” which was a follow-up to J.I.’s original song, which had accumulated 15 million plays across all platforms at the time.

In July 2020, he collaborated with Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers on the track “Spanglish,” which had both musicians combining English and Spanish in their rhymes.

It served as the lead singer for his upcoming E.P., Welcome to Starr Vol. 1, which was released on July 17 and included Lil Durk as well. It amassed 1.3 million streams on Spotify in the first 20 minutes.

A few days previously, Spotify announced a relationship with J.I. as part of its newly created RADAR program, which includes placement on Spotify’s official playlists, a mini-documentary, third-party partnerships, a Spotify Singles recording, and support for the E.P.’s release.

On November 30, 2020, the RIAA recognized his “Need Me” track like gold, his first career plaque.

J.I. published Hood Life Krisis, Vol. 3 on December 18, 2020, the third edition in his Hood Life Krisis series. A Boogie with da Hoodie makes a brief cameo on the “R&B Shit” on the E.P.
